Mold Damage and Your Insurance Claim

mold damage

Mold damage claims can be difficult to understand. Mold itself is not a covered cause of loss, however it is covered if it’s caused by a covered peril. In other words, if you have mold / mildew in the home that is not caused by a covered peril you have no coverage. If the mold and/or mildew damage is caused by or results from a water leak (one example) then an insurance claim for the cost of removal and repairs would be covered.

Most of today’s insurance policies have limits and some exclude coverage completely therefore it is very important to review your policy.

Concerns have increased due to public awareness and scientific knowledge about mold and its health related hazards. Mold can be especially prevalent in South Florida. From Miami to Pembroke Pines to Pompano Beach you\’ll find many older homes that are more susceptible. Mold contamination should be taken very seriously as it can cause severe illness to some people and considerable damage to property. Mold can cause a number of health problems if its spores are inhaled.

Here are but a few of the possible complications and dangers that could arise from exposure to mold damage:

  • Body Aches and Fatigue
  • Eye Irritation with Burning, Watery or Red Eyes
  • Food Intolerance and Allergy
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Memory Impairment
  • Mood Swings
  • Nasal and Sinus Congestion
  • Nose and/or Throat Irritation
  • Persistent Coughing
  • Profound Headache
  • Respiratory Problems (Asthma and other Infections)
  • Skin Rashes or Irritation
  • Suppression of Immune System

Mold damages often require testing to identify the remediation protocol for your specific type of damage. Once a protocol is prepared, a remediation contractor will follow this document when removing the damage from the building. Upon completion, a 2nd protocol will be conducted to assure repairs were successful.
